Session

Presbyterian churches are always team-led churches, with a body of laypersons ordained to the ministries of Discernment and Governance (ruling elders) and Compassion and Service (deacons). This church is governed by a session of nine ruling elders, moderated by the pastor. They serve in cycles of three-year terms, with three terms ending every year. The clerk of session, who is always a ruling elder but need not be serving on the session, represents the will of the session in official actions of the church.

The ministry of ruling elders as defined by the Book of Order is to “exercise leadership, government, spiritual discernment, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a congregation as well as the whole church” (G-2.0301). To this end, ruling elders discern matters both large and small for the good of the church’s witness and for the accomplishing of its mission. In this church, many of the ruling elders also serve as chairs for the various committees that govern the church’s day-to-day operations – as noted below.

Board of Deacons

The ministry of deacons, following the pattern of the Seven in the New Testament (Acts 6), is the ministry “of compassion, witness, and service” (G-2.0201). The deacons of First Presbyterian Church of Alton supervise the organizing of fundraising events, the collection of goods for those in need, and the planning of services for the support of programs both within and outside of our church that care for the marginalized in our community. The deacons are also in charge of attending to our homebound members, and various member needs in our community as they emerge.
